Umniah Remains a Leader and a Major Contributor in Jordan’s Digital Transformation Landscape Network & Fiber Expansion continues in 2021

March 2023

January 25, 2022 – Amman, Jordan: During 2021, Umniah continued to realize significant achievements in network expansion and growth in its broadband internet services with fiber. Umniah was also ranked as the fastest network amongst the local telecom operators in the third quarter of 2021

Additionally, Umniah continued to advance its contributions to the digital transformation scene in Jordan by partnering with leading global telecommunication service providers.

Umniah kicked off 2021 by signing an agreement with the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRC) to renew the Individual Public Telecommunications License for Batelco Jordan, a fully-owned Umniah subsidiary. The license renewal will allow Umniah to continue to provide the innovative telecommunications solutions and services supporting the digital transformation process in the Kingdom.

Deactivation of the 2G network
Umniah became the first telecom operator in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to announce the shutdown of its second-generation (2G) network in order to upgrade and invest in its existing 3G and 4G networks. The move is in line with global telecommunications trends and allows the company to offer the most advanced services and superior user experiences to its customers. Umniah’s 3G and 4G networks are well equipped to provide its subscribers all the advantages provided by these technologies, including better quality calls, faster data, smoother transmission between voice and data, better coverage and greater network stability

Inclusion of new areas provided with fiber services
Umniah, through FiberTech (its joint venture company with JEPCO), continued to expand its fiber network into the country’s most densely populated areas. With the ambitious rollouts, more than 600,000 homes and commercial buildings can now access Umniah’s fiber services that provide speeds up to 1000 Mbps and at very competitive rates.

Expanding the network coverage in the south
Umniah also successfully expanded its network in the southern governorates by increasing the number of coverage sites and upgrading the operation of its 3G and 4G networks. Efforts were stepped up to expand its mobile 4G footprint to include new areas across Jordan, offering improved coverage and services to over 3.2 million people.

A partnership with global telecom companies
Also in early 2021, Umniah announced its partnership with global telecommunications giant Ericsson to transform its radio access network (RAN) infrastructure. The agreement covers hardware, software and a range of services such as network management, system integration and support, as well as the transformation of existing 4G infrastructure in order to cater to the increased consumer demands for connectivity.

Implementation of an integrated billing system
Umniah continued its forward momentum of embracing advanced technology by partnering with Huawei to migrate its legacy billing platform to a new convergent billing system. The successful deployment of the agile platform works across the spectrum of networks to provide an improved customer experience, shorter time-to-market, and the realization of better business and operation responsiveness through a single billing platform for a more unified experience.

Sustainable Energy
Umniah recognizes that the telecommunications sector is one of the largest consumers of electricity and enacts policies that reduce its carbon footprint. The company’s solar farms, which began operations in 2019, are one of the largest projects in Jordan, generating 50% of its required power. The farms, which are located in Mafraq, Al-Daleel, Hallabat and Al-Azraq also provide job opportunities for members of the local communities.

Cyber Security
Umniah continued to trailblaze in the field of cyber and information security, with its cybersecurity operations succeeding in repelling numerous attacks, which have seen an increase since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. The cybersecurity team was able to stop denial-of-service attacks with strengths exceeding 51 gigabits per second, filtering more than 500 million spam emails, and blocking more than 165 million website attacks.

Umniah signed a partnership agreement with Trend Micro™, a global leader in the field of cybersecurity, which enables Umniah to provide its UCyberScout services to companies operating in the Jordanian market through its Umniah Security Operation Center (SOC).

Umniah was also the platinum sponsor of the Artificial Intelligence Conference and Exhibition for Defense Technology and Cyber Security (AIDTSEC 2021) organized by the Special Operations Forces Exhibition/ SOFEX – Jordan, where it showcased its cybersecurity solutions through its Cyber Security Academy as well as its artificial intelligence technologies.

Umniah will continue to implement its ambitious strategic plans and increase its investments in its network’s infrastructure in order to continue providing the best and most innovative telecommunication services and solutions to its customers, thus cementing its leadership position in the Jordanian market.
