Umniah Joins the GSMA Climate Action Webinar

March 2023

July 26, 2020 – Amman, Jordan: Umniah recently took part in a global webinar organized by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) to disclose its climate impact, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Umniah’s participation came as part of a major new GSMA-led initiative to develop a mobile industry climate action roadmap in line with the Paris Agreement, which set out a global framework to avoid dangerous climate change and encouraging countries to limit their greenhouse gas emissions.

During the webinar, Umniah Power and Energy Planning Manager Safwan Batchi provided a detailed overview of the steps the company has taken to reduce its carbon footprint, including incorporating solar technology into its energy mix and launching the UPOWER solar power project, which generates about 36 gigawatt hours annually — nearly 50 percent of the company’s total energy requirements of 72 gigawatt hours.

Commenting on the webinar, Umniah CEO Ziad Shatara underscored the importance of the issues and viewpoints tackled during the virtual event, particularly with regards to encouraging global telecoms operators to disclose their environmental impact. Shatara also noted that, on a global scale, the information technology and communications sector can contribute to the development of new and more efficient technologies in order to reduce reliance on fossil fuels by other economic sectors, which he stressed will require significant changes in attitudes, lifestyles and governing practices.

Shatara also reiterated Umniah’s complete commitment to safeguarding the environment and achieving sustainable development by supporting renewable energy projects, which he said serve as the most viable route towards reducing the costs and environmental impacts caused by conventional solutions.

The insights provided by participating operators during the event on will form the basis for a comprehensive roadmap for the global communications industry to eliminate its carbon emissions, in line with the Science-Based Targets initiative and the established target of zero warming emissions by 2050.
