Umniah’s the 8Log Holds a Panel Discussion on 5G and the Metaverse

Dec 13, 2022 – Umniah’s the 8Log hosted a discussion session titled “A look at the Metaverse through 5G Networks” as part of its plan to educate the public on the most recent local, regional, and international technological advancements. The event, which was held at the Tank, Umniah’s business incubator at the King Hussein Business Park, hosted a number of experts, students and specialists in the fields of telecommunications, technology, and e-marketing.

The session was moderated by Yazan Nofal, the founder of Dinasoortech and an expert in technology and e-marketing, while Obayda Abu Qwaider, a technology and information security expert, and Tareq Abu Issa, Network Architecture Director at Umniah; discussed the importance of having an advanced infrastructure to ensure the effectiveness of the Metaverse ; highlighting the role of 5G networks, particularly when it comes to speed, while emphasizing the significance of high bandwidths and low latency, especially in regards to remote and on ground work.

The two speakers showcased the most notable Metaverse applications and projects in the fields of medical sciences, virtual surgeries, engineering, education, arts, aviation, history, e-commerce, virtual conferences, information technology, among others, with specific focus on case studies related to remote surgeries and remote driving machines in dangerous places.

They also debated the risks and drawbacks of the Metaverse, explaining that it raises the risks of the internet, particularly as this technology is still new and lacks advanced cybersecurity levels, making it more vulnerable to illegal activities, privacy and security issues.

The speakers went on to add that the evolution of the Metaverse will be driven by the convergence and availability of several factors, including infrastructure and connectivity capabilities, digitization, artificial intelligence, and sensor data collection, as well as a significant increase in the value of reliable communication services and technologies.

In terms of the connection between 5G technology and the Metaverse, the speakers clarified that the increasing use of the 5G network paves the way for the Metaverse, particularly because users of this network will spend approximately an hour per week more on Metaverse -related services than users of the 4G network. According to studies, by 2025, more video content will be consumed for two hours per week on mobile devices, with one and a half hours spent on augmented and virtual reality glasses.

At the end of the session, the two speakers highlighted that the Metaverse will open up new horizons for telecommunications companies, as well as new opportunities and capabilities that will boost their growth and revenue if infrastructure is improved, and requirements for ensuring very low response times are met.

Arthur D. Little, the world’s leading management consulting firm, published a study mentioning that the Metaverse will be a major new market for telecommunications companies, with early estimates of the opportunities it will provide totaling $13 trillion by 2020.

According to Ericsson, the size of the opportunities provided by fixed wireless access enabled by 5G technology will be $5 billion in 2022, growing to $21 billion in 2025 and $53 billion by 2030.
