Umniah, the first telecom operator to launch 5G services officially in Jordan this May, announced significant achievements in expanding its 5G network coverage. Leveraging Ericsson’s 64T64R Massive MIMO technology (NASDAQ: ERIC), Umniah expanded its coverage to over 700 sites. Within the initial month of the 5G service launch, the activated sites surpassed 300, spanning key provinces including Amman, Zarqa, Irbid, and Aqaba.

Umniah’s 5G network sites strategically cover densely populated areas, ensuring a seamless experience for subscribers. As the first telecom operator to launch 5G services in Jordan commercially in April this year, Umniah initiated coverage in Irbid, Zarqa, and Amman.

The company allocated approximately $100 million to 5G services in 2023, with projected investments expected to reach $400 million over the next five years. These funds will be directed toward devices, equipment, technologies, advertising, sales channels, and human resources to ensure service delivery and sustainability.

Faisal Qamhiyah, CEO of Umniah said, “We are proud of the significant progress in expanding our 5G network across the Kingdom, reaffirming our commitment to providing the best experiences for our subscribers.” He emphasized the vital role of Umniah’s dedicated 5G network in driving digital transformation in Jordan.

Qamhiyah added “We are committed to supporting the government’s vision for a more connected and prosperous Jordan, and we believe that 5G is the key to achieving this goal. This technology creates more jobs, and business opportunities and increases government revenue, enhancing comprehensive and sustainable economic growth. Furthermore, 5G is the cornerstone for adopting AI and IoT technologies.” He emphasized that Umniah’s 5G network, utilizing Ericsson’s 64T64R Massive MIMO technology, will be the fastest in Jordan, significantly enhancing the end-user experience.

Kevin Murphy, Vice President and Head of Customer Unit Levant Countries at Ericsson Middle East & Africa said, “We are pleased to see Umniah expanding its 5G network coverage in Jordan. Umniah’s commitment to providing the latest technologies and services to its growing subscriber base is exemplary. We remain dedicated to supporting Umniah’s digital transformation journey by providing the most advanced technologies and services.”

After securing the 5G technology license, Umniah partnered with Ericsson to spearhead the initial phase of 5G deployment. This included enhancing infrastructure, supplying compatible devices, and offering essential services like network management, system integration, and support. Furthermore, the existing 4G infrastructure was upgraded to address the growing demand for cutting-edge communication technologies among Umniah’s customers.
