Jafarshop: All your home improvement needs in one place

Looking through social media we come across home renovation videos and home improvement ideas wishing it was that easy. Now with Jafarshop, the first Arab website to specialize in selling equipment and tools for maintenance, repair, installation, or anything for your home, it’s possible with a click of a button.

Encouraging DIY Projects

Jafarshop is an online shop that has all your home improvement needs. The online store has many categories to shop from including silicones, electric tools, gardening, painting, electrical tools, car care, paint, AC units and so much more. This shop is unique because it not only provides customers with products to buy, but it also includes content articles and videos on how to use their products and apply them to any home improvement or Do-it-Yourself (DIY) projects.

CEO and founder of Jafarshop, Mohammad Bata said, “Before establishing the platform we noticed very poor Arabic content in the home improvement industry which is not served in a proper way in our region.”

Bata completed a Master of Marketing degree in England and throughout his time there, he noticed how much home improvement and DIY projects are very common among house owners and retail shops. They all contain many departments and categories with a team of trained salesmen that can give correct information on the products you need and how to use them. This made Bata want to apply the concept in Jordan, but after studying the idea, he decided to start an online store instead of a physical one because of online shopping and social media in the region.

Helping the Economy Grow

Bata has previous experience in this industry working in his family hardware and tools business, which is why he was motivated to enter this one, “all startups usually focus on 3 or 4 industries and therefore limit their abilities and ways to evolve as individual startups. The home improvement industry is not as well served and represented not only in Jordan, but in the region” he says.

Over time, while working on his startup, Bata was really surprised at the amount of work and effort it took to start one, especially with a team. The work, coordination, and time that it takes is very draining, yet rewarding. Working on something you truly believe in has its benefits, but it does have many details that make it not so easy to keep up, Bata says, “starting a company has many details and it was not easy to start a company with a team. I was really surprised by the requirements and taxes we must pay every year, which can be one of the biggest challenges for any startup. Having said that, startups are very much helping the economy grow.”

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

How to Navigate

The Jafarshop online store is very easy to navigate, the categories available are clearly shown at the top with subcategories and a search bar is available if customers are looking for anything specific related to home improvement. They deliver to all parts of the Kingdom and have a one-month warranty on any manufacturing defects on all their products. Some products have a longer one, which is displayed in the product description.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

Customer Experience

Customer experience is essential when it comes to online shops, it bases the relationship between the company and its customers and sometimes the success or failure of a business is affected by these customer experiences. According to Bata, “customer experience in Jordan within the online business industry lacks the trust between the customer and the company, this is a result of previous businesses causing distrust among customers.”

Keeping that in mind, throughout their journey, Jafarshop makes sure that each customer is satisfied with the quality of services provided and if customers have any inquiries, they can easily contact customer service and they will reach out and solve any issues or answer any inquiries maximizing their home improvement experience.

Bata says, “At Jafarshop we care about serving the customer and giving them accurate information to build trust between us.”

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Video_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

The Tank’s Role

Since customer service is at the top of their priority, it was important for Jafarshop to work with an entity that builds on this relationship between the customer and the company. Working with the Tank by Umniah helped in connecting with organizations and investors that support startups. The Tank also gave Jafarshop and its team a workspace which helped in enhancing their management skills as a company.

Bata says, “The atmosphere was great to work in and the connections we gained with experts in our fields through coaching and workshops was wonderful. The Tank played a big role in enhancing our skills and experience as a company.”

Bata goes on, “Jafarshop hopes to keep growing and serving more people in Jordan and Egypt while expanding to other markets in the region and producing content in Arabic to help spread home improvement and maintenance knowledge.”

7asaleh: Digital Money Saving Tool for New Generation

Want to teach your kids how to make important financial decisions? Want to know how your children can learn about finance in a new and exciting way? 7asaleh has the thing for you.

With 7asaleh, kids and teens between the ages of 7 to 17 can get their own debit card account through 7asaleh’s mobile banking application. What distinguishes 7asaleh from other traditional savings bank accounts and children’s banking services is that it facilitates conversations between parents and children, allowing them to make independent financial decisions in a supervised and secure environment with parental controls.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

Need to Start Somewhere

Nayef Elfayez, who has a history of working in the banking sector, discovered that many of his clients lacked basic financial literacy and money management skills. As an MBA graduate and current banker, Elfayez knows that lack of financial literacy affects the economy. He found out that 80% of Jordanians do not have basic financial skills and only 25% have an active bank account.

After coming to this realization, Elfayez decided to come up with a solution. He says, “the best way to tackle this problem is to introduce habitual tools to teach kids the right money skills, as studies show that the money skills we have as adults start to form by the age of 7.” This motivated him to create a better financial future for coming generations, and therefore, 7asaleh came to be.

Now, as founder and CEO of 7asaleh, Elfayez uses gamified money learning experiences to instill financial responsibility in children and teenager.

According to Elfayez, “in our region the banking sector almost ignores children aside from the basic saving accounts that remain mostly untouched due to the difficulty of access and non-engaging platforms used.”

He tried to make sure that kids have a clear financial understanding by using methods that are tailored to their specific needs. This comes at a critical juncture in the world’s transition to a cashless economy.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

How it Works?

Parents must first sign up as guardians and complete a Know Your Customer form (KYC) in order to add multiple children and another guardian to the account. Parents have complete control over the app, which allows them to assign the child a certain level of financial independence and to terminate the service at any time. Users can monitor, pay, save, and donate using the digital money manager. They can also pay money online using prepaid debit cards, and parents will be notified with each transaction. Children will gain financial independence as a result of this, and parents will be able to monitor their children’s financial decisions.

7asaleh provides two plans for parents to choose from. The basic plan is free and includes features such as basic allowance tracking, chore management, and goal saving. The Premium plan includes all of the features of the basic plan as well as an internationally functional prepaid debit card with full payment capabilities via multiple channels such as point-of-sale, ATM, and online. These cards feature NFC payments (contactless) and 3D Secure technology.

Changing Times

Cash payments are becoming less used, and the future is shifting towards digital payments. However, there have recently been very few solutions for the young, tech-driven target, making 7asaleh the region’s FinTech solution. Children and teenagers can now use 7asaleh’s digital pocket money manager to visualize, use, and spend their money via secure online payments or cards, giving them financial independence. As one of 7asaleh’s goals, all of this is to be done under parental supervision.

Highest of Highs and Lowest of Lows

Elfayez has learned new things while working in this industry, and most importantly, he now knows how to plan his time more effectively and manage his time while working in today’s fast-paced environment. The highs will leave you feeling very high, and the lows will leave you wondering what to do next, but all of this is part of the entrepreneurial journey. Elfayez reminisces about his time working on 7asaleh. “When you work in a startup, your attention is pulled in a hundred different directions at once, and while you may think that a simple task like responding to emails will only take a couple of minutes, it will turn into an all-day affair.”

Although many people believe that the most important aspect of any business is the customer experience, at 7asaleh, the most important aspect of the customer experience is ensuring that there is a solution before the problem occurs. Customers at 7asaleh are put into the driver’s seat to make sure they are enjoying the experience and benefiting as much as possible.

Elfayez mentions, “I learned that for a startup to succeed they need to design the solution that fit the customer experience matrix”

The Tank’s Role

There was no better incubator than The Tank by Umniah to guide 7asaleh through their journey. 7asaleh was able to grow as a company thanks to the constant consultations, mentorships, and networking opportunities. “The Tank by Umniah was the perfect choice for us to start our journey with their remarkable facilities and their past season history,” Elfayez said. Since the beginning of the program, The Tank has been our safe haven where we could go to deal with the challenges we face, in addition to the numerous opportunities provided by their partners that have aided 7asaleh in various ways.” “I would like to thank The Tank Team who were extremely supportive throughout the incubation journey,” he continues.

Currently, 7asaleh is working on acquiring an internationally recognized financial education curriculum and working on localizing it to fit the Jordanian and MENA markets. This will be added to the app for both plans at no additional fee.

Alefredo Books; A New Era for Used Books

When we were students, the first thing we thought after the end of the school year was, what should I do with my used books? Should we keep them for a sibling, a relative, or a neighbor, or should we return them to school, stack them, and forget about them? The concept of reusing the book was present, but no specific goal was in mind.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]
A New Chance for a New Life

Exchanging books has become easier in recent years, thanks to the increased adoption rate of social media platforms, particularly with groups that allow members to share and sell used school books while also looking for the books their children require for the new academic year. Nonetheless, searching for books among various sources took time and effort.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

Today, a large number of Jordanian families visit Alefredobooks.com, a Jordanian online used book marketplace, to check on the availability and purchase used school books for their students.

One-stop-shop to Buy and Sell Used Books

It took more than two weeks for Ahmed Fareed Al Saif, the founder of Alefredo Books, to find a book he wanted to use for his Master’s degree research. He visited all the bookshops next to the University of Jordan and down town, still he couldn’t find the books, nor could he find a reliable source for used books. “Every student has the right to find the book they need, whether for research or for use during the academic year.” I thought about all the books that people don’t know what to do with, and decided to create a digital platform where people could buy and sell any school or university used books they require.” Alefredo Books is the name Al Saif gave to digital platform. It quickly gained popularity among Jordanian families.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

As the platform’s creation coincided with the economic conditions caused by the Corona Pandemic, it succeeded in gaining a large number of followers. “At the beginning of my project, customers would send me the pictures and the ISBN for the books they wanted to sell or buy via WhatsApp. It was a bit hectic for us and our customers. Moving on, I decided to create a digital platform where each customer could create an account with a user name and a password and sell the books directly through the website.”

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]
Creating a New Culture for Used Books

School and University books are considered to be somewhat pricey. Alefredo Books provides IB-IG-SAT AP-ACT and university students with books at half the price. Customers can pay online while purchasing, or they can pay cash at the time of delivery. “Our ultimate goal is to serve the students,” Al Saif explained. “All of the books on the website are in good and excellent condition and are usually half the price.”

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

Customers who want to use Alefredo Books services can do so by visiting the company’s website or calling the company’s support team. “Our goal is to foster a culture of reusing books among Jordanian families and students, as well as a culture of recycling books, respecting intellectual property, and discouraging the copying of original books,” Al Saif stated.

The website is expanding at an incredible rate. The figures speak for themselves. JD50,000 was earned by parents through the sale of used books, thus considered a direct income for them. Over 2 million books were saved from destruction. JD 220 thousand dinars is the amount saved by parents by purchasing used books rather than new ones.

Overcoming Obstacles and Challenges

Finding help and advice to start a business is one of the most difficult challenges that any startup can face. Fortunately, Alefredo Books received complete support from The Tank by Umniah, allowing them to overcome obstacles and challenges. “We would not have gotten this far without The Tank’s tremendous support,” Al Saif said. “Like any startup, I was excited about establishing and expanding my business. The Tank assisted me in achieving my goal, designing my business model, and providing me with all the marketing consultation that has allowed us to celebrate success today. Alefredo Books has now established a presence in the United Arab Emirates. It was a vision that came true. ” Added Al Saif.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

Al Saif urged all entrepreneurs and startups to pursue their dreams, saying, “Don’t give up, don’t underestimate your project, keep trying, and most importantly, believe in yourself and your team, listen to them and accept criticism, and, last but not least, apologize for any mistakes you make in your business, whether to your customers or team members. It is the reputation that counts by the end of day.”

MarthaEDU: Decreasing Illiteracy in the Deaf Community

A community functions at its full potential when its members embrace inclusivity and diversity. Language development for those who are hard of hearing, though often overlooked, is essential to successful community interconnection. MarthaEDU is committed to providing an outstanding interactive and affordable educational experience through their mobile application.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

The app is an accessible Arabic sign language teaching tool that is perfectly tailored for use at home. It is designed to create an enjoyable and encouraging environment where children, aged two to five, can learn with their family and friends.

“Quality learning is a crucial right every child is entitled to.” Said Ehab Kahwati, Martha EDU’s CEO. “MarthaEDU’s mobile application is committed to providing opportunities for deaf children who don’t have access to educational products in Jordan and the Middle East as a whole.”

How it all Started?

Taking a trip back in time, Omar Zaghloul found himself on the wrong street. Upon asking for help, he was met with the confusion of passersby who could not communicate with a deaf person effectively. Kahwati was at the bus station when he saw Zaghloul. He tried to help but failed to understand Zaghloul’s desired location. To solve this issue, Kahwati took out his phone and began to type out questions. Shocked, he quickly found out that Zaghloul, a man in his fifties, could not read or write well. “This is what happens when there is an impermeable language barrier.” Says Kahwati.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]
The Importance of Gradual Learning

Through engaging with specialists and experts, the team learned the fundamental rules for building a first-rate education system to improve the quality of life for deaf people.
“We concluded that the path of education, for optimal learning, should start at the age of two. By starting healthy development young, future problems are avoided completely.” stressed Kahwati.

The team understood there must be gradual learning, starting with basic vocabulary, which eventually results in the child reading and writing sufficiently. Thus, MarthaEDU was born, encouraging learning within the home, with the help of the family, making the transition into society as smooth as possible.

Martha’s Solution for Illiteracy

90% of deaf people are born to hearing parents who have no knowledge of sign language or how to properly accommodate the needs of deaf children at all. This makes learning sign language difficult, and consequently, communication between parent and child becomes hindered.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

In Jordan, most families with deaf children can’t afford to provide sign language education with the services available today, while some parents refuse to teach their children sign language and hide them from society because of the culture of shame. As a result, the illiteracy rate is nearly 80% in the deaf community.

According to Rasha Abu Shakhdam, Chief Operations Officer and a co-founder of MarthaEDU, illiteracy is a lifelong challenge in a world where reading and writing are essential in being an active member of society. Abu Shakhdam said, “Illiteracy is a challenge that lasts a lifetime, that follows a person and makes their life a lot harder. This is the reason we are putting forward Martha for the education of deaf children and their parents, so they can learn their mother language—sign language—in an official and interactive way. This is so they can be an active part of society and acclimate naturally.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]
A Family App

This is why MarthaEDU was established. It is an app for both parents and children to learn the Arabic sign language. Children learn vocabulary with child-friendly cards that accompany the app. The cards are colorful and visually stimulating, containing written words paired with cartoon images. The app also shows short videos clearly demonstrating how to sign each word. Focusing on accessibility, the app does not need an internet connection to function, making it usable at all times.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]
Overcoming Challenges

“The main issue for any startup is finding the proper guidance and advice,” says Kahwati, “We believe that we would not have been celebrating our success without the support received from The Tank by Umniah. By incubating our project, it not only provided us with a work office and a professional license at the King Hussein Business Park, but with professional financial and legal advice which heavily contributed to the success of our project.”

As for Abu Shakhdam she urged entrepreneurs to believe in their capabilities and approach entities like The Tank by Umniah and said, “We call on all entrepreneurs to never give up, believe in themselves and their ideas, and, in return, they will find an entity which will support them.”

Both Kahwati and Abu Shakhdam confirm that the tremendous support which MarthaEDU received from The Tank has enabled them to focus on the core of their business and, as a result, today MarthaEDU is endorsed by leading international civil societies. “We wouldn’t have gone this far if we were not incubated by The Tank.” They both said.

Give Your Car Ride a Unique Boost With Jordanian Startup “FunBox”!

Car rides with strangers in taxis can get a little too boring and a bit awkward at times, let’s face it, most of us resort to gazing at the outdoor scenery rather engaging in a conversation. Jordanian startup FunBox created a fun little twist to boring car rides by offering passengers a mini vending machine on the go! In other words, a chance to snack, engage in conversations, and enjoy the ride further.
You might be wondering how this all works, so let’s delve into everything you need to know about this newest startup!

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]
The Idea Behind FunBox

Co-founders Tariq Yousef and Khaleel A’mar were once approached by a snack promoter. And because everybody loves a free sample of basically anything, they happily agreed to take it. What baffled the two Jordanians after they tried the snack was how the promoter never asked for feedback. Instead, he moved to distribute more samples to other people.

As businessmen, Yousef and A’mar pondered on the operations of snack companies. “We began discussing whether or not this approach is functional,” explained Yousef. “Market research is an increasingly important factor towards product success and viability. But when the agent never asked for comments nor feedback, we wondered how effective this product will be.”

The encounter got stuck in their heads for a while until they realized that this approach was used by many promoters from various companies. As they were riding in a car, they discussed a more effective way to both promote offerings while collecting market intel. They knew customer feedback was a necessity, but they were aware how hard it was to get a customer to stop and fill a survey, especially if they are in a hurry.

It was only when they snacked during their car ride that all the puzzle pieces fit together. “It was at a time when companies like Careem and Uber were emerging. We realized that several people use these transportation services and often do nothing than sit around. If we found a way to promote these snacks within these car rides and have the drivers engage with the passengers, we can collect feedback all while making the car ride fun,” informed Youssef.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]
How Does FunBox Work?

Yousef and A’mar reached out to the vendors before anything else. They collected the free samples these entities usually distribute and placed them all in one box. Their next step was to contact transportation companies. At the beginning, they were solely working with Uber Jordan, but they expanded their operations to Careem Jordan and Taxi Zain Iraq.

“The idea was to place this box in every car ride, whereby drivers will ask the passengers if they’re interested in purchasing a snack from the mini vending machine,” explained Yousef. The process includes scanning the QR code on the box that’ll lead you to FunBox’s mobile application. After clicking on the desired items, the driver hands it to the passengers and engages in a conversation, explaining the purpose of this service. According to Yousef, “Once the driver states the purpose of this service, they’ll encourage passengers to send feedback via the app. The feedback will be immediately recorded and shared with the vendors to help them collect more data before they decide to introduce their offerings to the market.”

Impact of COVID-19

The pandemic was a challenge to various business around the world. Like many other places, the transportation sector got heavily affected in Jordan. Yousef stated that after the increase in safety precautions and measures taken, the number of car rides per day significantly declined. This rendered feedback to decrease, especially with people opting to stay at home and avoid public transportations even from large transportation companies. However, with the now steady decrease of the virus and the slow reopening, FunBox is working to get back on track, treating COVID as no more than another hurdle on the way.

The Tank by Umniah

Like with many startups, incubation was a necessity they couldn’t forgo. Knowing the benefits that come with incubation, FunBox decided to choose “The Tank”. Throughout their time there, they have benefited from mentorship programs, workshops, networking opportunities, and strategy consultations. But every startup had its favorite thing about the incubator’s programs and offerings. For Yousef, it was the location that stole his heart. “The Tank’s facilities were extremely beneficial to us. In a time where we couldn’t find a suitable base for FunBox, the incubator was more than happy to open its doors for us. We were able to conduct all our operations, train, and meet with investors, vendors, and car drivers at the Tank. This has significantly made our lives easier.”

With plans to expand further in the MENA region, targeting UAE and KSA as a first step, Yousef, cofounder of FunBox startup, had a message to send to budding entrepreneurs out there. “Think outside the box, and don’t be afraid to create ideas that have never been heard of or were never seen. If you believe that your idea will change something for the better, then by all means, go ahead and work hard to make it happen!”

Your Children’s Safety with “Areeb”

Being a working parent whose children take the school bus, you are always concerned about their safety and wellbeing to and from school. Today and with the help of Jordanian startup “Areeb“, you can ensure your kids are always safe by tracking their school buses’ route and location.

About Areeb

Back in 2017, and upon realizing the hassle parents go through in finding the time to drop off or pick their kids from the school buses, Bara’ Sulaiman Harb decided to create a solution. “There’s nothing parents want more than to stay close to their kids,” he admitted.

“Stemming from this, we chose Areeb – meaning ‘close’ in English- as the name of our startup and service to assure parents that their kids are always close and safe on our watch.” The startup aims at organizing school bus rides and coordinating them between parents and the schools. It offers various features for both parties to ensure the students’ safety and their parents’ peace of mind.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]
How Does Areeb Work?
For Parents:

As working parents, you may have trouble coordinating your kids’ time with work hours. Areeb offers you various solutions to help keep a vigilant eye wherever you are! “With Areeb’s mobile app, you get real-time notifications about the bus route and current location, departure time and expected arrival time for each student,” Harb explains.

You can get instant reports about your child whether that be related to their well-being, presence on the bus, or the time they are expected to arrive home. This allows you to better manage your time if you want to pick them up at your doorstep or if you want to ease your mind knowing that they have arrived home safely.

For Schools:

What sets Areeb’s service apart from all others is that it is not only exclusive to parents, but it is beneficial for schools too! According to Harb, “It’s important for schools to be aware of their buses’ routes and locations. This is particularly true when parents tend to communicate with the Head of Transportation at Jordan’s schools about necessarily updates.” Areeb allows the Heads of Transportation to monitor the bus drivers, choose optimal and strategic routes to save time and money, and ensure the safety of students and drivers as well the school’s reputation.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]
The Impact of The Pandemic

COVID-19 presented the Jordanian startup with various hurdles. The main one is that schools shifted to e-learning with no clear timeframe as to when they will welcome students again. “At first, we felt as though there was no longer a market for Areeb. But with time, we decided to take advantage of the circumstances by redesigning and uplifting Areeb’s features, to provide more services that emphasize on safety.” With the possibility of school’s reopening in a few months’ time for the 2021-2022 school year, Areeb will be ready for their comeback with a newly developed app and stronger features.

The Tank by Umniah

“I’ve always believed that you won’t be able to take your business far if you’re alone and without guidance,” explained Harb. “With The Tank, we were able to build meaningful relationships with startups, mentors, and investors- as networking is a crucial element in the success of any business.” He went on to add that the incubator’s facilities, mentorship program, and events have helped them develop not only their skills but also their business footprint in the Kingdom.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

On a parting note, Harb highlighted that while entrepreneurship may not be a walk in the park, you need to push your ideas to life to succeed. “My advice to all aspiring and young Jordanian entrepreneurs is to ensure they have these three key elements down: the right idea, the team, and the right time to enter the market. These will launch you to success.”

Anwan: A Digital Platform for Content Entrepreneurship

Content creator Maisa Al-Khdair is in love with Arabic words and their poetic feel. With a deep-rooted belief in their impact, she was rather astonished with the lack of this content on digital platforms.

With the aim of spreading her love for her work and promoting the Arabic language, she decided to co-create Anwan alongside her brother Amr Al-Khdair, a Jordanian startup dedicated to shed a spotlight on the language while helping young writers perfect their craft.

The Story of Anwan as an EdTech Startup

Anwan, the plural for the Arabic word “Noon”, which means “inkwell”, was the inspiration behind the startup’s name.

To Maisa Al-Khdair, the written word is more than just a couple of letters littered across screens, books, and papers. She believes that it is rooted with tremendous power and possibilities. As a Jordanian, and a Middle Eastern before all else, she grew up reading classic works of many writing virtuosos. It was no surprise when their books filled her with a deep love and appreciation towards Arabic words.

“There’s something unique about the Arabic language. It evokes feelings no other language in the world can.” Following her passion, she decided to work as a content creator and share her own words to the world.

However, the more she took part in the world of online content, the more she uncovered gaps in Arabic content such as low quality of available content online, and the lack of professional writing tools among young writers.

“I knew Arabic content might be less abundant compared to other languages, but I never expected to see such disparity,” admitted Al-Khdair.

After much deliberation, she decided to create Anwan, to encourage people who share her love for writing and Arabic to spread their work for everyone to see.

Let’s Talk About Anwan

“Anwan is a passion project,” explains Al-Khdair. “My brother and I worked together to create this startup with the goal of teaching people the needed skills to turn their love for writing into a career.” In the Middle East, spotlight careers tend to be in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, engineering etc. while careers like writing wither in the dark.

However, writing is as rewarding as any of the aforementioned. It requires creativity of thought, organization, and knowledge. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a piece of cake, which explains why sometimes you might stumble upon low quality works online. Bearing all of this in mind, Al-Khdair wanted Anwan to be a platform that provides writing enthusiasts with the skills they need to perfect their talent.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

Anwan tends to work as an EdTech startup, and currently allows users to read lessons on content creation that are available free on the website, and provides them a free space to implement their writing. It also guides them through the right writing process, with the help of an editorial team that checks their submitted work and provides them with feedback to perfect their writing before publishing online.

The founders want to expand in the near future by providing an online course in content creation and establishing an online marketplace, to work on projects. In such a way, Anwan would fulfill one of its main goals in empowering young writers and providing them with opportunities in Jordan and beyond. The content industry has huge potential in the region and is one that needs to be further explored.

The startup’s website is filled with pieces by several authors across various fields from art to health to technology, all serving one common goal: to strengthen the Arabic presence online and help people turn their passion to a career.

Being a Female Entrepreneur

Today, we hear stories of women taking leadership roles and redefining their position and importance amidst society.

“Being a female entrepreneur, who has turned her passion into reality means a lot of things,” admitted Al-Khdair. “It means hope, strength, and above all, that nothing is impossible if you’ve got the right mindset.”

The young entrepreneur prides herself in her work ethics, perseverance, and determination. She explains that these are key qualities to changing the game as many other women have been successfully doing these in the past few years.

Anwan and The Tank by Umniah

Guidance is always appreciated whether one has years of experience or none at all. Before building plans for their startup, Anwan sought Umniah’s incubator, the Tank. Recalling their experience, Al-Khdair stated that the Tank has helped them in various ways: developing their business plan and objectives, coming up with their financial schemes, and understanding their legal presence. In addition, networking opportunities helped them grow and expand further.

According to Al-Khdair, it takes a great deal of courage and determination to turn your passion into your career. Whether that involves creating a startup or content for people to see, everyone has got the courage needed, they are only hesitant to act on it.

“Go after your passions. It’s okay to be afraid, but don’t let that stand in the way of your next success story.”

Cyborgs Technology: Jordanian’s Go-to Startup for Innovative Transportation Services

We have all had to use public transportation at least once in our lives, and at some point, we may have dreaded it. Whether it was because of the long wait in the sun, or the impatient bouncing when it rained, we wished we could walk to the bus stop and jump on the bus promptly. However, what if we tell you there is now a solution that can solve transportation issues experienced with arrival timing, routes, or ride duration? This solution is presented by Cyborgs Technology!

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]
What is Cyborgs Technology?

Engineer Zaid Haymoor and Dr. Tareq Sanabra have been friends for over twenty-one years. During one of their frequent encounters, Haymoor shared his experience, “I needed to catch the bus to get to an appointment, and I realized that there’s an opportunity to improve coordination and centralized transportation in Jordan, through an organization transportation platform.” This way, people trying to get from point A to point B will be more aware of buses’ arrival and departure times as well as their routes.

Haymoor and Sanabra discussed the issue further. What started as a regular conversation turned into a brainstorming session. Ideas were thrown here and there for some time until the two friends decided to take action into their own hands. Eventually, they founded Cyborgs Technology, a Jordanian startup offering competitive solutions in the fields of web and mobile applications, IoT boards, and AI powered big data analysis dedicated to tending to customers’ unmet needs.

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]
What Sets Cyborgs Technology Apart?

“We are aware that everyone’s struggle is different. We may all face the same problem, but we each adapt to it differently,” stated Haymoor. Building on this notion, Cyborgs Technology avoids uniformity; rather it looks at a business’s process and needs to offer a deeply customized and innovative solution. One important aspect of this startup is that it has worked for over a year on building algorithms and KPIs to provide the best and shortest route to take.

The startup happens to also be the second-place winner of Jordan Public Transportation Hackathon. They created a mobile app under the name of “Jordan lines,” an intelligent transportation system that serves as a centralized platform for public transportation, showing times, routes, duration, and virtual stops.

There Are Challenges Everywhere You Go

According to Haymoor, their biggest challenge was collecting digital data to develop their solutions. “Jordan faces a challenge in acquiring the proper data, which monitors public transportation activities.” The startup, therefore, faced a challenge in finding the data they were looking for.

In addition, when the COVID-19 took control of the world economy, they were afraid it might hinder operations; however, they found a way around it. “With the pandemic and the move towards digitization, businesses shifted towards remote work. And we began witnessing the rise of e-commerce, particularly,” stated Haymoor. With transportation and delivery being at the core of online businesses, Cyborgs Technology adapted e-commerce service options to their line up and provided several businesses with routing solutions that have eased their sales operations.

Incubation is crucial to the success of any startup. However, every incubator offers a different experience. According to Haymoor, the experience brought by The Tank was extremely valuable that he would be ready to go through it repeatedly. “I don’t know where to begin, the Tank has aided us greatly!” said the founder of Cyborgs Technology. “But I guess that two things cannot go unmentioned: the creative business space that keeps the ideas floating, and the workshops that help you build your dreams step by step.”

On a parting note, Haymoor wanted to extend some advice to anyone thinking about taking the entrepreneurial path. “An idea without a product, an investor, or a customer is only an idea. Build a plan, set some goals, and work diligently and constantly. Entrepreneurship is not only about opening a business; it is also about creating products and services that matter.”
